Change is never easy, especially if one is a creature of habit like I am! We are no longer going to learn spelling in the traditional manner that most of us learned; we are going to work grammar into our writing more; and our teaching of reading strategies will be laid out in a more uniform format so that we are all teaching the same thing. These changes are good! I am thrilled to have a student teacher at this time so that I have some time to research ideas so that I give your kids what they need to be successful. Be patient - I am learning too!
Kids, you are awesome! I am really enjoying getting to know all of you, and you have already managed to challenge me as a teacher (in a good way!). You have done a great job of getting into our routine, you work hard, and you have welcomed Mrs. Kraus and made her feel comfortable in our class. Thank you!
Challenge Question: Who is the author of My Rows and Piles of Coins?
Write down your answer (don't tell your friends!), put it on my desk, and you will earn $5!

Off to a great start!
So far, so good! This group is off to a wonderful start this year! I am really enjoying getting to know each child. I must apologize for missing so many days at the beginning of the year; I normally do not miss much school. I have taken one personal day so that my husband and I could go out of town, but the other days have been for professional development, which will benefit your children.
There are some rather large changes that will be taking place in the next few weeks. Beginning next week, we will no longer have weekly spelling lists or tests, which also means that we will no longer be doing the spelling activities. This is a school-wide initiative. We will be beginning a program to work with word patterns so that children can apply those skills in order to spell most any word they need to spell, rather than just memorizing the weekly list. There will still be opportunities for at-home activities. This is new to all of us, so please be patient while we work to organize. The past two days 2nd and 3rd grade teachers have been working together to plan the best strategies for teaching your children.
Thanks for caring about your child's education - it makes a huge difference!
